Qualification test on "space springs"

A qualification test campaign, on two HT-SMA HDRA (High Temperature Shape Memory Alloy Hold Down Release Actuator) devices, was recently successfully completed at CIRA Space Qualification Laboratory. The test campaign was executed on behalf of TSS Innovationsprojekte GmbH and Technosprings Italia srl within the ESA program GSTP (General Support Technology Programme).

The qualification test campaign, performed at CIRA, verified the proper working of the two shape memory actuators in operative conditions, i.e. under the mechanical loads (sine, random and shock loads) and the environmental loads (thermal-vacuum) experienced by the devices during the life cycle (launch, release and staying in orbit).


Technosprings plans, carries out prototypes and produces smart and elastic devices, using shape memory alloy materials . SMA materials are known for their unique properties: shape recovery for the effect of the heating (memory with effect of form) and capability of big deformations without any exhaustion (Superelasticity). The actuators in shape memory alloys are effective solutions in several industrial fields, i.e. they are used as valves for the ventilation and the air conditioning (VAC) for automotive and thermos-hydraulic fields, or as security devices for fire prevention equipment. In addition, they can be used in the biomedical field as devices for fixing bone portions after traumatic events. In the aerospace field, shape memory devices should replace pyrotechnic systems or the thermal knife device used for the release and positioning of the space equipment (i.e. solar panel arrays, antennas, probes, etc…)​
