SMAF – Smart AirFrame

Obiettivo

The project aims to achieve the following objectives:

  • Development of a design method of composite structures based on an integrated system SW/HW capable of ensuring structural weight reductions, compared to the traditional design, thanks to the identification of dimensions of impact damage (BVID) lower than the size currently identified and classified by visual inspection. The SHM system is aimed both at diagnosis and prognosis of the structural health of the component. The system will be validated and proved up to TRL 5, on a representative final demonstrator of a wing box segment
  • Demonstration of the increase of the economic efficiency and structural performance of  components built with out of autoclave (OoA) processes. Validation will also be performed through dedicated tests and the development of a cost model which will be powered and validated by data obtained in an industrial environment.

Attività nel progetto CIRA

CIRA will develop numerical simulation methods for the diagnosis and the prognosis of structural health of damaged composite structures by impact. An integrated system inclusive of methods and algorithms and  also of the associated hardware based on piezo and fiber optics technologies will be designed and assembled. Based on the integrated system developed, new design criteria will be defined aimed at reducing structural weight respect to the current design approach.

CIRA will develop out-of-autoclave processes starting from basic technologies as prepreg and liquid infusion, and materials, in order to obtain a reduction of costs and an increase in the structural performance of components compared to conventional processes. The validation will be performed in the industrial environment in order to acquire data useful to the validation of cost model and for the validation of both processes.

The validation process is based on a series of technological demonstrators with complexity gradually increasing, up to structural sections in real scale or otherwise representative of real components. The choice made in the project is to aim to a technology demonstrator representative of a high aspect ratio wing section of a RPAS category in order to obtain improved aerostructural  performance  respect to  "long endurance" requirement.
