On Board Systems and ATM

The growing use of unmanned aircraft and an anticipated increase in civil air traffic determine a need for more efficient, effective, reliable and highly autonomous on-board avionic systems. Europe is particularly active in this regard and provides various tools:

  • in the case of SESAR 2020, a line for the development of "Air Vehicle Systems" to permit full interoperability with the civil air transport system for RPAS, general aviation and helicopter aircraft;

  • in the case of the European programmes H2020 and JTI Clean Sky 2, various lines of development of avionic systems in the field of SAT (Small Air Transportation);

  • to support, also through national and/or regional research programmes, the national manufacturers of General Aviation aircraft and helicopters, as well as SMEs specialised in on-board avionics.

With its line of research in On-board Systems and ATMs, CIRA focuses in particular on:

  • New generation avionic systems for UAS aircraft, namely the development of state-of-the-art technologies to make the various operating scenarios possible, in the medium and long term and with a growing degree of autonomy, in particular:

    • "pilot-in-the-loop" management of RPAS systems in controlled airspace;

    • "autonomous" management of RPAS systems of high operating efficiency;

    • "autonomous and cooperative" management of a fleet of high efficiency RPAS systems.

  • Innovative cockpits for manned aircraft, with the development of technologies relating to:

    • on-board avionics and cockpits with integrated functions;

    • cockpits and remote control systems for aircraft with a single pilot on board;

    • avionics and control systems for personal aircraft with innovative configurations.

The growing use of unmanned aircraft and the expected increase in civilian air traffic call for the development of more effective, efficient and autonomous on-board avionics systems. CIRA is committed to the development of new generation avionics systems for unmanned aircraft and innovative cockpits for manned aircraft.
