Transonic Wind Tunnel PT1<img alt="" src="" style="BORDER:0px solid;" /> Wind Tunnel PT1Transonic Wind Tunnel PT1<p> <br></p><p style="text-align:justify;">The PT1 is the only one Italian aerodynamic transonic wind tunnel and it belongs to a tunnel category, due to its size, used mainly for research activities and for industrial purposes when aircraft parts have to be aerodynamically characterized in order to support the preliminary airplane design phases.</p><p style="text-align:justify;">The wind tunnel is operative since September 1998. From May 2000 CIRA PT-1 is member of the Supersonic Tunnel Association International (STAI).</p><p style="text-align:justify;">The transonic wind tunnel CIRA PT1 provides the capability of aerodynamic and aeroacoustic testing, for industry and research applications, in subsonic, transonic and supersonic flow regimes with very low flow turbulence value. </p><p style="text-align:justify;">The tunnel has the capability for testing of two-dimensional models (wall to wall configuration) such as airfoils, rotor and turbine blade sections and three-dimensional one such as scaled aircraft  or orbit re-entry vehicles.</p><p style="text-align:justify;">The facility may operate in two different modes: continuous and intermittent.</p><p style="text-align:justify;">In continuous mode the tunnel runs in the subsonic regime, up to Mach 0.40, and it is powered by a variable speed, variable pitch fan connected to an 150 kW electrical motor. In intermittent mode, powered by a pressurized air injection system, it runs over the subsonic and transonic regimes, up to Mach 1.1, with a supersonic operating condition at Mach 1.4<em> </em></p><p style="text-align:center;">PT-1 (Operating Envelope)<br></p><table width="100%" class="ms-rteTable-4" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr class="ms-rteTableHeaderRow-4"><th class="ms-rteTableHeaderEvenCol-4" rowspan="1" colspan="1" style="width:539px;">Parameter<br></th><th class="ms-rteTableHeaderOddCol-4" rowspan="1" colspan="1" style="width:539px;">Subsonic</th><th class="ms-rteTableHeaderEvenCol-4" rowspan="1" colspan="1" style="width:539px;">Trans/Supersonic</th></tr><tr class="ms-rteTableOddRow-4"><td class="ms-rteTableEvenCol-4">Mach</td><td class="ms-rteTableOddCol-4">0.1-0.37</td><td class="ms-rteTableEvenCol-4">0.35-1.15/1.4</td></tr><tr class="ms-rteTableEvenRow-4"><td class="ms-rteTableEvenCol-4">Max Reynolds</td><td class="ms-rteTableOddCol-4">12 106*</td><td class="ms-rteTableEvenCol-4">27 106*</td></tr><tr class="ms-rteTableOddRow-4"><td class="ms-rteTableEvenCol-4">Test Section Size</td><td class="ms-rteTableOddCol-4">350 x 450 mm</td><td class="ms-rteTableEvenCol-4">350 x 450 mm</td></tr><tr class="ms-rteTableEvenRow-4"><td class="ms-rteTableEvenCol-4">Operation mode</td><td class="ms-rteTableOddCol-4">Continuos</td><td class="ms-rteTableEvenCol-4">Intermittent</td></tr><tr class="ms-rteTableOddRow-4"><td class="ms-rteTableEvenCol-4" rowspan="1">Run time</td><td class="ms-rteTableOddCol-4" rowspan="1">Unlimited</td><td class="ms-rteTableEvenCol-4" rowspan="1">150 sec</td></tr><tr class="ms-rteTableEvenRow-4"><td class="ms-rteTableEvenCol-4" rowspan="1">Stagnation Pressure</td><td class="ms-rteTableOddCol-4" rowspan="1">1.05-1.8 bara<br></td><td class="ms-rteTableEvenCol-4" rowspan="1"><span style="color:#777777;">1.05-1.</span><span style="color:#777777;">8 bara</span></td></tr><tr class="ms-rteTableFooterRow-4"><td class="ms-rteTableFooterEvenCol-4" rowspan="1"></td><td class="ms-rteTableFooterOddCol-4" rowspan="1"></td><td class="ms-rteTableFooterEvenCol-4" rowspan="1"></td></tr></tbody></table><strong><br></strong><p> </p><p style="text-align:justify;">The wind tunnel is equipped with a wide range of measuring devices such as 2D and 3D internal balances, thermal imaging camera, low and high frequency acquisitions pressure systems (PSI 8400 & 100 kHz bandwidth, 16 bit, 500 ks/s) and nonintrusive flow visualization systems.</p><p style="text-align:justify;">Since 2000 the PT1 has been involved in research programs  funded by the EU, the Italian Aerospace Agency (ASI) and by the Italian Ministry for the University and Research (MIUR).</p><p style="text-align:justify;">The facility has also been active in commercial test campaigns (aerodynamic and aeroacoustic) in cooperation with AgustaWestland, AleniaAermacchi and Piaggio Aero Industries.</p><p> </p>
