Studying F-35 “noise” levels<img alt="" src="https://www.cira.it/PublishingImages/attivit%c3%a0%20Milnoise.jpg" style="BORDER:0px solid;" />https://www.cira.it/en/competences/environmental-impact-of-air-transport/studiare-il-rumore-degli-f-35/Studying F-35 “noise” levelsStudying F-35 “noise” levels<p style="text-align:justify;">CIRA, in collaboration with the Italian Air Force (IAF) Technical Test Laboratories (TTL), has successfully completed the noise characterisation campaign relating to the new F35-A aircraft, recently adopted by the 13th squadron of the 32nd Wing of the Italian Air Force, based in Amendola (Foggia, Italy).</p><p style="text-align:justify;">As a result of the 20-year collaboration between our Centre and the Italian Air Force, the activities carried out within the context of the JSF-Milnoise programme aim to assess the environmental impact of the operational activities carried out on the air base and, if necessary, to optimise flights in terms of schedules, manoeuvres and trajectories so as to achieve a reduction in the overall level of noise pollution, respecting the population that lives close to the airport.</p><p style="text-align:justify;">Noise impact assessments have always posed a challenge from a technical point of view, due to the peculiarity of the acoustic tracks measured alongside the complexity of the physics of the phenomenon itself.</p><p style="text-align:justify;">The experimental campaign conducted in Amendola used a total of twelve environmental noise monitoring stations, arranged in eight measurement points situated along the runway and linked via wireless technology to a central server hosted in the control tower.  The test set-up, designed by CIRA engineers and technicians at the Technical Test Laboratory, has made it possible to assess the accuracy of the sound measurements in real time, by means of which it will also be able to evaluate the impact caused by the use of the Italian fleet of F35-A aircraft throughout the national territory, as well as to carry out state-of-the-art research activities within the aeroacoustics sector.<br></p><p style="text-align:justify;">July 25th, 2018<br></p><p><br></p>2018-07-24T22:00:00Z
