The initiative, promoted by the International Forum for Aviation Research (IFAR), is aimed at young researchers in the aerospace field. Organized as part of the Early Career Network (ECN) program, the event brought together international teams in an intense collaborative effort to develop innovative and sustainable solutions for aviation, aligned with the Future of Green Aviation agenda and the European goals of Flightpath 2050.

CIRA was among the key participants of the 2025 edition, represented by a multidisciplinary team composed of engineers Caterina Speranza, Clemente Serpico, Concetta Palumbo, and Piero Migliorato. The team worked on developing a model to optimize the flight trajectory of a medium-range aircraft, aiming to reduce fuel consumption and emissions while complying with operational and environmental constraints. The project was carried out in a collaborative, open-source environment, integrating aerodynamic, propulsion, and mission analysis models in an iterative process.

Participation in the IFAR X-Challenge provided a significant opportunity to highlight CIRA’s role within the IFAR network, reaffirming its commitment to promoting young talent, fostering international scientific cooperation, and advancing non-competitive aeronautical research in strategic areas such as emissions, safety, noise, and testing infrastructure.

2025-05-18T22:00:00Z
