The Demise Observation Capsule is a "black box" that will be installed on board of the future European Launchers, to acquire images and data useful  for studying the trajectories of the various components during their return to the earth. The aim is to optimise the next space launches as regards to the return of potentially dangerous debris.</p><p style="text-align:justify;">The tests, aimed at characterising the structural dynamics of the capsule and ascertaining its capability of withstanding mechanical stresses during the launch, were completed in collaboration with the Dutch partners of S[&]T and the Danish partners of GOM-Space. The results were decidedly positive: the titanium alloy structure, designed and built by CIRA using fast prototyping techniques, was subjected to accelerations exceeding 10,000 G, proving to be perfectly capable of protecting the delicate internal components, such as the avionics and the quartz optical access.</p><p style="text-align:justify;">The DOC project, funded by ESA within the scope of the Future Launch Preparatory Program (FLPP3) will continue with the realisation of the capsule flight prototype, the final qualification of which will also be carried out at CIRA through mechanical and thermo-vacuum tests.</p><p style="text-align:justify;">Particularly committed to this project, CIRA is also responsible for the aerodynamics, the thermo-structural design and the realisation of the structures, mechanisms and thermal protections of the capsule.<br></p><p style="text-align:justify;">September 19, 2017</p>2017-09-18T22:00:00Z
