TECDEP ASPEN

Obiettivo

This project aims to develop low cost innovative avionic products for General Aviation cockpits in order to fully support the future civil air traffic system prospected by the programs NEXTGEN in the US and SESAR in Europe.

Such products will specifically focus on increasing pilot awareness and flight safety adding advanced functions to be integrated in a glass cockpit, such as:

  • Upset detection and warning systems, so to alert pilots of potential hazardous flight situations that could lead to a Loss of Control in Flight (LOC-I) conditions, that is currently the main cause for General Aviation accidents in the USA
  • Traffic awareness and alerting systems, for detection of potential not well clear or collision conditions and support the pilot in resolving such hazardous situations
  • Weather awareness systems, for identification, forecast and visualization of potential hazardous weather areas that could lead to unsafe flight conditions, using available information from satellite and ADS-B systems
  • Advanced navigators compatible with NEXTGEN and SESAR new requirements, able also to support the pilot in facing with high workload flight conditions, like the ones that can result from hazardous situations as above mentioned.

The project is performed through an international cooperation with Aspen Avionics Inc., a leading company in the US avionic market for General Aviation retrofit.

Attività nel progetto CIRA

CIRA and Aspen Avionics complementary capabilities and known-how are combined for deploying innovative technologies into affordable avionic products, in order to be available for all General Aviation potential users.

Specifically, the product concept is defined starting from Aspen knowledge of the General Aviation market needs and CIRA's research activities. Then CIRA designs the algorithms and implements the prototype system using its own competences and available methodologies / technologies developed during the years through its participation in several research projects.

After a prototype is available, CIRA's researchers supports Aspen Avionics for the product finalization, by performing the prototype engineering, integration into the cockpit displays, certification and commercialization.
