EATS - Efficient Air Transport System

Obiettivo

The Efficient Air Transport System (EATS) project aims to develop three research topics.

The first research topic addresses the development of innovative algorithms for Self-Separation. It constitutes an extension of the already consolidated competences acquired by CIRA in this research area, aiming to introduce optimization aspects to increase the efficiency of the maneuvers (reduction of fuel consumption) into the already developed methodologies for the Traffic Avoidance. The second research topic addresses the development of innovative algorithms for Collision Avoidance and constitutes the extension of the already acquired competences of CIRA in this area. Finally, the third research topic addresses the development of algorithms for the optimization of TMA operations and constitutes a new research topic with respect to the consolidated activities of CIRA. The application scenarios of the technologies considered in the project include both the en-route phase of the flight and the TMA (Terminal Maneuvering Area) flight phase, where higher airspace density volumes represent more critical applications (for instance, in the proximity of main airports).

Attività nel progetto CIRA

Development and implementation of algorithms and software for Efficient Separation Assurance (ESA), airborne and ground-based, to be used as a support to the decision making of pilots and controllers and/or as an automatic function. These algorithms constitute the Separation Assurance enabling technologies for the implementation of the delegation of the separation responsibility to the pilot (on-board or remote), as foreseen in the SESAR framework under specific conditions. They also constitute enabling technologies for the reduction of the workload of the ground controller in presence of high traffic density in the assigned sector, aiming, at the same time, to the management of separations in an efficient manner in terms of reduction of the fuel consumption associated with the separation maneuvers.

Development and implementation of algorithms and software for Emergency Collision Avoidance (ECA), airborne and ground-based, to be used as emergency automatic function in case of malfunction and/or failures of the Efficient Separation Assurance (ESA) system. These algorithms constitute the enabling technologies of Collision Avoidance for emergency automatic backup of the Separation Assurance System and the automatic support to the pilot (on-board or remote) in presence of mid-air collision risk.

Development and implementation of algorithms and software for Sequencing and Merging and for Curved and Continuous Descent Approach, aiming to the optimization and automation of flight operations in TMA (Enhanced Operations Management, EOM). These algorithms constitute the enabling technologies for increasing the operations efficiency in terminal areas near airports, in order to reduce the environmental impact while preserving the safety in presence of high traffic volumes.
