The decade-long collaboration between CIRA's Space Qualification Laboratory and SITAEL continues in relation to the Italian Space Agency's PLATINO program, a high-tech, multi-instrument, and multi-mission space mini-platform.
Following the qualification campaigns of various components of the PLATINO satellite, such as the Engineering Qualification Model (EQM) and the Flight Model (FM) of the HT100 Hall effect electric thruster, the EQM and FM of the Power Conditioning and Distribution Units (PCDU), and the EQM of the Power Processing Unit (PPU) for the HT100, the space qualification campaign for the FM of the PPU was recently completed. This campaign successfully passed the thermal vacuum tests at CIRA's Space Qualification Laboratory.
The PLATINO program (mini Piattaforma spaziaLe ad Alta TecNOlogia) of the Italian Space Agency (ASI) aims to provide Italy with an innovative platform in the 175-350 kg class. The electric propulsion platform PLATINO, equipped with the HT100 Hall effect thruster developed by SITAEL, is being developed by a consortium led by SITAEL, with partners Thales Alenia Space Italy, Leonardo, and Airbus Defence and Space Italy. This platform is designed to support a wide range of missions in different operational scenarios, including Earth observation, telecommunications, and scientific missions, and is also intended to be deployed in constellations.
Specifically, the PLATINO-1 mission will utilize a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) operating in the X-band, while PLATINO-2, equipped with an optical sensor developed and provided by NASA/JPL, will operate in the field of and support atmospheric pollution control, mapping fine particulate matter.
SITAEL is the largest fully privately-owned company in Italy operating in the space sector and a world leader in the small satellite market, space electric propulsion, and onboard electronics. The company is part of Angel Holding (an Italian group that is a global leader in the rail, digital mechatronics, and aerospace sectors) and has over 255 highly qualified resources and state-of-the-art infrastructure, positioning itself among the main players in the international New Space Economy. SITAEL has revolutionized the way space products are conceived, both in the upstream segment, with research, development, and creation of new satellite platforms and technologies for space exploration, and in the downstream segment, with the development of innovative applications and services based on in-orbit space infrastructure.
