SSA 1kN Hybrid Rocket Engine Test Campaign

The firing test campaign of the SSA 1kN hybrid rocket engine is currently underway, developed by CIRA within the HREP (Hybrid Rocket Engine Program) project, part of the Innovative Propulsion programme PRORA DM 662/20.

The SSA engine employs paraffin-based hybrid propulsion technology and delivers a nominal thrust of 1000 N. Compared to previous versions, this configuration features a significantly improved thrust-to-weight ratio and full reignition capability, a key feature for future orbital manoeuvring and space access applications.

The system incorporates a dedicated torch igniter, designed to ensure reliable and repeatable ignitions. The campaign builds on CIRA's extensive experience in hybrid propulsion, developed within the national HYPROB programme demonstrator line.

Testing is carried out at the at the space propulsion laboratory of the University of Naples "Federico II".
