ASTONISH Project: an important milestone achieved for the safety of airport ground operations
As part of the ASTONISH project, the “Improved aircraft protection on the ground” solution team, led by CIRA and comprising Collins Aerospace, CATEC and University of Naples "Federico II", has achieved an important milestone.
The team has successfully carried out a joint experimental campaign at the ATLAS Bravo facility, hosted by partner CATEC in Andalucía. These tests are aimed at providing a comparative analysis of the performance of different sensing systems based on radar, camera and LiDAR technologies for airport ground-operations surveillance.
In a controlled environment, with strong team coordination, different hazardous situations, such as vehicle incursions onto the runway, were successfully simulated and tested.
The technologies developed will improve airport surface-movement safety nets, reducing the risk of conflicts and collisions between aircraft or between aircraft and vehicles.
