EAGLES
Efficient Autonomous multirole drone Guard for criticaL infrastructures surveillancE missionS
Main Goals of the Project
The EAGLES project (Efficient Autonomous multirole drone Guard for criticaL infrastructures surveillancE missionS), funded under the specific call EDF-2022-LS-RA-SMERO-NT of the European Defence Fund (EDF) 2022, is a 48-month initiative aimed at revolutionizing the surveillance of critical infrastructure through an integrated system comprising a main vehicle ("mothership") and a swarm of autonomous drones (UAVs) coordinated by artificial intelligence algorithms to optimize strategic data collection. With an estimated budget of approximately 3.79 million euros, this architecture seeks to lower reconnaissance costs and reduce tactical risks in military environments. Because this specific call targets research actions led by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the research and design activities are conducted by an international consortium led by the German SME coordinator IBK-Innovation GmbH & Co. KG and composed of strategic partners including Dream Innovation SRL for Italy, Drone Geofencing and I&S Partners for France, and Paragon AE for Greece.
CIRA Activities in the Project
CIRA participates to all the technical tasks of the projects, from the System-of-Systems feasibility studies, mothership design to the demonstration of the enabling technologies, with the leadership of different WPs and tasks.
Based on that, the CIRA main contributions are:
- Contributions to the definition on the mission requirements With the Advisory Board members
- Contributions to the feasibility studies for the mothership and the S-o-S
- Contribution to the mothership design (avionics, flight mechanics, aero-acoustics characterization)
- Contribution to the development of the enabling technologies: swarm coordination, AI-based perception and prediction algorithms, GNC strategies for the recovery of the mini-drones
- Leading of the WP3 (S-o-S feasibility studies), WP5 (Preliminary Design of the Enabling Technologies), WP9 (Development of the Enabling Technologies), WP11 (Proof of Concept) and several other tasks related also to the other WPs.
- Leading the execution of validation of the swarm coordination, AI-based perception and prediction algorithms with the flying of COTS mini-drones.
- Contribution to preparation of project results summary and gap analysis
