AIRCLINS
Aviation Impact Reduction through CLimate INtelligence for Sustainable ATM
Main Goals of the Project
The AIRCLINS project, funded under the SESAR programme, focuses on the development of innovative concepts and disruptive technologies at low TRL levels, aimed at supporting the development of methodologies for assessing the impact of ATM on climate change. The main objective is to develop ‘climate-intelligent’ concepts and models that will enable the creation of a sustainable, safe and resilient ATM/U-Space system. AIRCLINS is developing two proofs of concept: the ATM Climate Impact Toolbox and the U-Space Eco-Safety Toolbox, providing a new generation of decision-support capabilities for ATM/U-Space impact assessment. Specifically, AIRCLINS will:
- refine predictive modelling of extreme meteorological risks such as low-level wind shear;
- will identify composite environmental assessment metrics that integrate CO₂, non-CO₂ emissions and noise;
- will improve the prediction of contrails and the assessment of the climate impact of non-CO₂ emissions by combining artificial intelligence-based approaches.

CIRA Activities in the Project
CIRA contributes, primarily as leader of the AIRCLINS architecture design working package and in particular as task leader for the design of the ATM climate impact toolbox, to the development of new metrics for emissions (CO₂ and non-CO₂) and noise, to the development of models for predicting contrail formation and their management by air traffic controllers, as well as to the development of machine learning models for predicting atmospheric hazards (specifically, low-level wind shear). It will support the development phases of the use cases, which will be based on gathering the operational and scientific needs of stakeholders and then translating these into functional requirements. It will also support the validation phase of the defined proofs of concept.
