AMBER

Obiettivo

AMBER (innovAtive deMonstrator for hyBrid-Electric Regional application) is a EU-funded project aimed to mature, integrate and validate key technologies necessary for a megawatt-class hybrid aircraft electric propulsion system powered by hydrogen fuel cells.

By combining electric power and thermal power, an extremely efficient aircraft propulsion system can be obtained, with reduced emissions, thus enabling a faster path towards net zero.

In particular, the AMBER project aims to develop the following subsystems:

  • Electric propulsion

  • Combustion engine

  • Hybrid-electric coupling

  • Thermal Management

  • Control system

A significant reduction of the greenhouse gas emissions and fuel burn by at least 50 % compared to 2020 state-of-the-art regional aircraft represents the final objective of the project in order to meet the ambitious environmental goals set out in SRIA and the Clean Aviation topic call.

Attività nel progetto CIRA

Within the AMBER project, CIRA is in charge of the following activities:

  • execution of experimental tests on the heat exchangers of the heat management subsystem for the selected hybrid-electric propulsion system: this includes the activities of interface design, test engineering, plant operation, execution of test matrices, data acquisition and delivery;

  • support for the development of algorithms, control logics, SW and related architectures with reference to the application of propulsion control systems;

  • support for certification activities in terms of identification of disruptive technologies, assessment of their impact on current airworthiness and certification requirements, gap assessment and solution proposals;

  • management of the project activities related to Dissemination, Communication & Exploitation.
