BIG DATA FACILITY

Obiettivo

The objective of the Big Data Facility project (BDF) is to provide a hardware and software platform of research and experimentation in the field Big Data Analytics for the management and analysis of large amounts of data coming from research domains to which the CIRA traditionally addresses n its activities.

The complexity of the data generated during normal experimental and/or numerical simulation makes it essential to develop IT tools with high computing capacity and develop innovative data analysis techniques, because they come in huge volumes (terabytes, petabytes, etc.), with data type and non-homogeneous characteristics (structured, non-structured, semi-structured) and, often, they are produced with extreme speed. Therefore their processing requires technologies and hardware and software resources that go far beyond the conventional management systems and data storage. Through the use of BDF platform, then, CIRA will provide advanced data analysis tools with which to meet the demand for business decision makers, researchers, analysts, etc. to analyze complex data and extract meaningful information to turn them into actionable knowledge for the achievement of competitive advantage.

Therefore the goal of the BDF project is twofold: on the one hand the acquisition and consolidation of skills in strongly emerging and innovative ICT area (such as Big Data, Cloud Computing, Internet of Things, Cyber-Physical Systems), and the other the implementation of a W and SW platform for research and testing of these technologies.

Attività nel progetto CIRA

CIRA is owner and manager of the entire project, and leads it in collaboration with internal and external partners. As a result, the activities of CIRA cover the entire life cycle of the Big Data Facility project namely:

• Definition of system requirements

• System Design

• Implementation and Development

• Integration and Testing

•Product Deployment

The research and experimentation are defined in two objectives (OR):

The OR1 is the design and implementation of the hardware and software infrastructure required for a Big Data Analytics system. In this activity the project team will proceed to the definition of the functional requirements of a Big Data system in terms of data volume, speed and variety, the design of a reference architecture for Big Data applications with high scalability characteristics and made concrete on several case studies provided, eg. environmental monitoring, weather forecasting, bioinformatics, health management, etc.

The OR2 is the analysis and implementation of innovative data analysis techniques to be implemented in the infrastructure built in the OR1 for processing and extracting meaningful information from massive datasets with data type having different electronic characteristics, frequency, etc. available in the various use cases of experimentation. It will be analyzed and implemented technical specifications of massive data analysis use cases, evaluated the performance and characteristics of the implemented system and, therefore, with the evaluation of the results through validation by end users. Finally it will proceed to the deploy of the system.
