ESRE Best Paper Award 2025: CIRA reaches the podium

CIRA has achieved third place in the 2025 Best Paper Award, the annual competition organized by ESRE – Association of European Space Research Establishments.

The recognition was awarded to the paper “Mapping of Fluvial Morphological Units from Sentinel-1 Data Using a Deep Learning Approach”, authored by CIRA researcher Massimiliano Gargiulo (Earth Observation Directorate) in collaboration with the University of Salerno. The prize was presented during the ESRE Annual Event held on 2 December 2025 by Josef Kaspar, Chair of ESRE, and Eleni Patouni, Policy Officer at the EDA.

The event took place on the sidelines of the ESRE Board Meeting, which was attended, on behalf of CIRA, by Director General Stefania Cantoni, Aeronautics Area Director Marcello Amato, and Head of the Strategic Planning and Institutional Relations Unit Francesco Ferrigno, the latter two serving respectively as members of the ESRE General Assembly and Secretariat.
