This is achieved by means of simplified numerical and experimental analyses of both acoustic phenomenon and emission and diffusion in atmosphere of chemical pollutants due to air traffic.

Purpose

Research activities of laboratory aims to develop solutions to mitigate the environmental impact due to air traffic. The numerical activities are particularly focused on this topic, possible solutions might be a management strategy, barriers for acoustic absorption or isolation as well as more efficient control algorithm for engine management.

Research topics

Research topics of interest concern all the aspects related to damaging effects for environment and population due to air transport. These are the aspects whose Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection (CAEP) takes care inside ICAO, and regulated by the well known Annex 16. Volume 1 of the annex concerns noise regulation for aeronautical engines, while volume 2 deals with their pollutant emissions.

In the wide field of research of environmental acoustics and pollutants emission, the laboratory has achieved know-how and is improving the part of diffusion models, with reference to aeronautical and space engines. For the acoustics section the focus is on the simplified modelling of environmental noise impact and mitigation system design, while for the section of emissions the main topic is diffusion and dilution modelling of gas and particles in atmosphere. Beside the numerical simulation activity, the experimental one is very important to support modelling activity as well as the design for mitigation of unwanted effects. The experimental activity envisages the design of optimal set-ups both in terms of measurement abilities and efficiency, and aeronautical and space engines characterization both in terms of noise production and pollutants emitted.

In details, the main research topics are jet-noise, with reference to the optimization of measurement set-up, for the acoustics, while for the pollutants, the interest of laboratory is focused on both deterministic and stochastic diffusion modelling as well as the measurement of ion and Hall effect thrusters plume analysis.
