Electronics and Communications<img alt="" src="http://webtest.cira.it/PublishingImages/ELTD_01.jpg" style="BORDER:0px solid;" />https://www.cira.it/en/competences/electronics-and-communications/Electronics and CommunicationsElectronics and Communications<p>​​The disciplinary framework "Electronics and Communications" supports all the experimental CIRA activities with the expertize on signal - digital and analogue - handling, circuit design and software development for embedded applications as well as the integration of complex experimental setups aimed at on-ground and in-flight testing.<br></p><p>This area of expertise includes:</p><ul style="text-align:justify;"><li><p>the " Communication systems" area;</p></li><li><p>the "Electronics and microelectronics" area.</p></li></ul><p style="text-align:justify;">Main goals are increasing knowledge and proposing solutions on:</p><ul style="text-align:justify;list-style-type:disc;"><li><p>system (architectural and detailed) design of RF communication systems based on telemetry standards for internal programs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, UAV and Unmanned Space Vehicle, USV) for telemetry (downlink) and telecommands (uplink)</p></li><li><p>design and implementation on FPGA of communication-related functional modules:</p></li><ul><li><p>waveform generation – modulation/de-modulation functions based on waveforms such as, for example, CP-FSK, QPSK, CDMA,</p></li><li><p>bit-stream processing – randomizer and de-randomizer, BER-Tester and Pseudo Random Sequence Generator,</p></li><li><p>antenna electronic beam forming and beamsteering;</p></li></ul></ul><ul style="text-align:justify;"><li><p>rapid-prototyping of communication systems using FPGA-based COTS demo-boards for the base-band section and RF boards for the up/down conversion.</p></li></ul><ul style="text-align:justify;"><li><p>system engineering by designing, integrating, testing and characterizing electronic systems/units for:</p></li></ul><ol style="list-style-type:decimal;"><ul style="list-style-type:circle;"><li style="text-align:justify;"><p>signal conditioning;</p></li><li style="text-align:justify;"><p>data acquisition and measurement automation; </p></li><li><p>monitoring and controlling actuators by embedded electronics;</p></li><li><p>electrical power generation and distribution to energize experimental setups on the flying platforms;</p></li></ul></ol><ul><li><p>research on signal conditioning for innovative sensors.</p></li></ul><div><p>The expertise of this area covers:</p><ul><li><p>design, integration, test and characterization of radiofrequency communication systems;</p></li><li><p>development by model-based methods of digital signal processing algorithms based on Software Defined Radio (SDR) paradigm;</p></li><li><p>implementation of SDR algorithms in VHDL on FPGA;</p></li><li><p>antenna system design – definition through electromagnetic simulation of antennas number, type and position on flying vehicles;</p></li></ul><ul><li><p>design of electronic boards for signal conditioning, embedded control, data acquisition and measurement automation;</p></li><li><p>design and development of real-time software modules for embedded systems;</p></li><li><p>integration of electronic systems by basing commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) products;</p></li><li><p>design and development of software modules for distributed sensor monitoring and actuation.</p></li></ul></div>
