Successful tests for DLR in the hypersonic facility GHIBLIhttps://www.cira.it/en/communication/news/test-in-ghibli-for-dlr/Successful tests for DLR in the hypersonic facility GHIBLISuccessful tests for DLR in the hypersonic facility GHIBLI<p style="text-align:justify;">A test campaign was successfully performed in the hypersonic facility GHIBLI for the German Aerospace Center DLR in the framework of the European funded LIGHT-TPS project.</p><p style="text-align:justify;">The LIGHT-TPS project is devoted to research and development of Ultra-High Temperature Ceramics (UHTC) coatings for super light-weight Thermal Protection Systems (TPS) of space re-entry vehicles.</p><p style="text-align:justify;">In particular 4 UHTC coated cylindrical samples of 2 cm of diameter were exposed to an hypersonic jet of plasma composed of air and argon, achieving surface temperatures of 1800°C and over for duration of 5 minutes.</p><p style="text-align:justify;">Two UHTC coatings made of different zirconiun diboride (ZrB2) compositions were tested with the aim of increasing oxidation resistance.</p><p style="text-align:justify;">GHIBLI facility has proved once again to be an extremely useful tool for material sample characterization also thanks to its flexibility in following and timely satisfying the customer needs.</p><p> </p>2017-08-27T22:00:00Z
