VISORS

Validation Infrastructure SuppOrting Remote Simulations

Main Goals of the Project

Real-time simulations (RTS) are widely recognized as a fundamental tool for supporting the validation of systems and are therefore extensively used in V3-level validation campaigns within the SESAR context. With the emergence in recent years of new airspace users and new Air Traffic Management (ATM) concepts — and with those expected soon (such as U-Space and Advanced Air Mobility (AAM)) — Verification & Validation (V&V) processes have become increasingly complex, with a growing demand for infrastructures capable of validating these concepts and operational conditions.

The VISORS project aims primarily to validate, through a cost–benefit analysis performed via a dedicated demo test, the use of distributed real-time simulations to enhance V&V processes. This includes reducing costs related to travel and the potential relocation of platforms, as well as simplifying the organization of simulations involving complex scenarios by enabling the seamless integration of functionalities available across different validation platforms. In addition, the project will address the impact of geographical distribution on Human Performance (HP) analysis, as well as data-sharing security aspects.

CIRA Activities in the Project

CIRA is involved in all project Work Packages, acts as coordinator of Task 3.1 (Experimental Demo Test planning) and T3.5 (Demo execution). CIRA contributes to VISORS through the following technical activities:

  • Contribution to the State of the Art for distributed real-time simulators and services in Air Traffic Management (ATM) and Unmanned Traffic Management (UTM),
  • Contribution to use cases, Operational requirements and Functional requirements definition for Real-Time Simulation platforms that shall participate in distributed simulations.
  • Contribution to protocol definition and implementation and facilities update and integration to achieve the interoperability between the simulators.
  • Coordination of Demonstration plan definition, starting from the scenario definition and detailing actors, roles, involved facilities and the conditions for the tests.
  • Coordination of demo execution, to guarantee the execution of each test and the correctness of the recorded data and human performance measures.
  • Contribution to the definition of a set of metrics for the economic Analysis, the evaluation of possible costs and benefits of a multisite simulation architecture.
  • Contribution to Communication and Dissemination activities.
