ORCHESTRA

Optimised Electric Network Architectures and Systems for More-Electric Aircraft

Main Goals of the Project

ORCHESTRA targets the challenges of airborne Electrical Power Systems (EPS) for current and next generation aircraft with the overall goal of:

  • 25% EPS weight reduction;
  • 10% EPS efficiency improvement.

ORCHESTRA adopts an innovative approach involving modular scalable “Technical Building Blocks” (TBBs) incorporating  emerging technologies and breakthrough design ideas.

Technical aspects will include:

  • Electrical architectures;
  • Machines power management and control;
  • Harness solutions;
  • Thermal management;
  • Electric energy storage;
  • Experimental and virtual testing.Systems integration.

CIRA Activities in the Project

CIRA is involved in 5 different WPs:

  • WP2 “Requirements and specifications”,
  • WP4 “Electric power distribution technologies”,
  • WP5 “Optimised electric machines”,
  • WP6 “Onboard power conversion”,
  • WP8 “Thermal management demonstration”.
