AirGreen 2, structural validation of the Morphing Flap for the future regional aircraft

As part of the AirGreen2 Project, funded by Clean Sky 2 Programme (REG IADP) and coordinated by CIRA, the experimental ground tests campaign for the structural validation of the Morphing Flap for the wing of the future TP90 regional aircraft of Leonardo was successfully completed.

Within the project the morphing technology was applied to the design of the flap in order to extend the use of the flap not only to the take off and landing flight segments but also during the cruise to obtain enhanced performance in terms of lift generation in take-off and landing and to adequately set the load distribution along the wing during cruise, thus minimising the stress level and enhancing the aerodynamic efficiency. The device in fact assures three different working modes: full camber variation in fully deployed configuration for hyper-lift purpose and combined and differential deflection of the tabs along the span in retracted configuration to control the distribution of load.

The morphing flap detailed design was developed by University of Naples Federico II while the full-scale ground demo test article (5x0.35 m), that successfully completed all structural static and functionality tests, was manufactured and tested by NOVOTECH.
