FTB4UAS Flight Test Bed For UAS

Obiettivo

The project has the main objective to meet the need for flight testing to validate enabling technologies for remotely piloted and autonomous unmanned vehicles.

This is achieved through the development of flying platforms (Flight Test Bed - FTB) and associated ground segments to support the in-flight validation of enabling technologies for the development of UAS. One FTB is the FLARE platform (type Optionally Piloted Aircraft), available at CIRA and provided with a Permit to Fly released by ENAC authority. The present FLARE configuration allows testing of avionic technologies peculiar for RPAS. The present operative set-up allows the platform to fly in a non-segregated airfield close to CIRA site, with the support of the Capua Aeroclub, as for the continuous airworthiness services, based on a NOTAM released by ENAC. Flight operations are conducted under control of the Grazzanise CTZ, based in the 9th Squadron of the Italian Airforce.

In May-June 2015 timeframe, two test campaigns have been performed, relative to the TECVOL II and RAID projects, both aimed at the validation of avionic systems for the Detect & Avoid and testing of traffic separation procedures in the presence of unmanned vehicles, using the OPA FLARE platform operated as RPAS.   

The flight testing capability will be furtherly developed to allow in-flight validation of avionics, on-board systems and aero-structural technologies, using either the FLARE platform, suitably updated, or new FTB's, based on the experimental requirements collected by RPAS- related projects.

CIRA is totally responsible for the activities that will be carried out within the project including the design and  development of flight demonstrators, related test engineering and flight tests.
