LISA - Aerospace Structures Impact Lab

Impianto LISA Because over 70% of aircraft accidents take place near the ground, cabins and seats designed to absorb the impact would improve the chance of passenger survival.

Through PRORA, CIRA hosts the Aerospace Structures Impact Lab (LISA), the world’s largest aerospace laboratory for open-air crash tests. LISA can perform tests on water, concrete and soft terrain, using real aircraft, both helicopters and airplanes.

In 2003 ENAC, the Italian National Civil Aviation Authority, recognized LISA by issuing it a technical approval certificate for impact tests. Tests carried out in the framework of the European HELISAFE program, which demonstrated the effectiveness of “airbags” derived from the automotive industry to protect both occupants and the aircraft itself.

The safety technologies developed within the PRORA framework could provide Italian industry, already a leader in the sector, with an additional competitive edge over its international competitors.
