Ghibli and gamma rays, nuclear physics for aerospace reentry<img alt="" src="https://www.cira.it/PublishingImages/immagine%20termografica.jpg" style="BORDER:0px solid;" />https://www.cira.it/en/communication/news/test-in-ghibli-per-mefia/Ghibli and gamma rays, nuclear physics for aerospace reentryGhibli and gamma rays, nuclear physics for aerospace reentry<p style="text-align:justify;">It concerns the MEFIA project, Novel Physics Methodologies for Aerospace, the latest test campaign conducted within the Ghibli hypersonic facility.</p><p style="text-align:justify;">During the test campaign, two ablative P50 test article material were exposed to the hypersonic plasma jet of air and argon, reaching superficial temperatures above 1800 ° C for a time of about 60 seconds and allowing the measurement of the characteristic ablation parameters.</p><p style="text-align:justify;">These and other testing campaigns, approaching the radioactive material tests, planned in the near future are a key part of the project that CIRA is performing in collaboration with the INFN (National Institute for Nuclear Physics) and the Campania University "Luigi Vanvitelli" with the aim to develop a novel measurement technique for the ablation of thermal protection systems for space vehicles during the reentry phase.</p><p style="text-align:justify;">This technique involves the implantation, by means of radioactive ion particles accelerator of 7Be, in the P50 and the indirect measure of the ablation rate through the material rate reduction and, consequently, of the radioactive emission.</p><p style="text-align:justify;">December 1st, 2017<br></p>2017-11-30T23:00:00Z
